Built on Jung’s theory of psychological types, the classification was assembled by Katharine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers around the middle of the twentieth century, with sixteen types arising from combinations of four axes. A type is a starting point, not a box
The sixteen types are not boxes to sort people into; they are a starting point for finding the first words to describe yourself. Two people of the same type raised differently, having lived through different things, become entirely different people. When you read the result, take it as "this part sounds like me" rather than "so this is what I am", and the parts that do not fit will not trouble you.
Answers changing with the setting is normal
Partway through the test you hit a question where you think, at work I am like this but at home I am like that. That is natural, because people do behave differently in different settings. When it happens, picture the version of you that takes no effort, the one nobody is watching, and answer from there. Answer as the role and you get the type of the job you currently hold, not your own.
How to read the compatible types
A pairing listed as compatible means conversation is a little more likely to come easily, not that you should be looking for that type. In practice, two people whose types do not match get on well for years far more often. Rather than asking someone their type and weighing it up first, use it after you have met, to understand why things feel easy or awkward. That fits what this framework is good for.
Use it to understand people unlike you
This scheme earns its keep less in describing yourself than in understanding someone who works nothing like you. A person who needs the plan settled in advance and a person who wants to decide once they see the situation each find the other exasperating, and neither is in the wrong. Once you know that difference, it becomes clear what to ask of each other when you are both in the same situation.
What not to use MBTI for
Do not use MBTI in hiring or appraisal. Even the formal instrument was not built for that, and a short test like this one far less so. Knowing someone type does not tell you their ability or their character, and a sentence that opens with "well, you are that type" mostly closes the conversation. Keep it for looking at yourself and for understanding others, which is where a framework this rough can still be genuinely useful.

When you take the test, the result also shows how far each axis leans. If one sits near 60%, that axis shifts easily with circumstance, so it helps to read both types.
