Why the hour pillar reads as the inner self
In this tradition the year pillar is the face others see, the day pillar is you yourself, and the hour pillar is the side that does not show. The old explanation for why the hour pillar speaks of both the inner self and later life is that people mind other eyes less as they age, so the original grain comes through.
