Compatibility
Read the harmony between two people from their Four Pillars.
Compatibility places two Saju charts side by side to read the harmony of a bond. maiunse scores five aspects: the bond of the two day masters, the spouse palace (day branches) in harmony or clash, the zodiac-year relation, how each fills the other's lacking elements, and the balance of energy between the two charts. Exchanging saju papers when a marriage was being discussed was a widespread custom in the Joseon period, and people have long distinguished outer compatibility, read from the animal signs, from inner compatibility, read from the full charts. The five aspects weighed here belong to the inner reading. Still, pairs who score low often last, so it is better read as advance notice of where the two of you are apt to rub than as a verdict.
How it works
Enter both birth dates and times and we build two full charts, then score how the Day Masters generate or control each other, how the branches combine or clash, how the five elements complement each other, and how the two chart structures sit together.
What you'll get
You get an overall score with the strengths and the soft spots behind it, the Ten God bond between the two Day Masters, social compatibility from chart structure, zodiac-animal compatibility, and a link straight into each person's own chart. It is not only love and marriage: how you work together and how you handle money each get their own reading.
Do not measure a relationship by one number
The big figure is what catches the eye in a compatibility result, but the useful part is the strengths and weak points listed beneath it. Two couples can both score eighty and be nothing alike: one easy because the day stems agree, the other clashing at the day branch while the elements fill each other in. Treat the number as a marker telling you which section to read closely, and go through the items one by one instead.
It is for knowing where you will rub
The use of a compatibility reading is not to be judged a good match or a bad one. It is to know in advance where the two of you tend to miss each other. An item listed as a weak point means that is where words may not land, so all it takes is explaining a little more and checking in at that one spot. In a relationship the gap between knowing and not knowing is surprisingly large, because most of what goes wrong there is not malice but a misreading nobody caught in time.
Being different is not being wrong
When the word clash appears it is easy to hear it as incompatible, but in this tradition a controlling relation restrains and refines at the same time. Two people with the same grain find each other easy but push each other very little; two who differ collide but also fill in what the other lacks. Look at couples who last and you will usually find a mix of items that agree and items that do not.
How to bring the result up with them
Handing someone the result as it stands turns a conversation into a verdict, and leading with the score lets that number bury everything else. If you want to raise it, take one item and ask how they see it, along the lines of "apparently we tend to miss each other here". And if they do not put stock in compatibility readings, there is no need to talk them round; the point was the conversation about the two of you, not the reading itself.
What not to settle with a reading
Do not decide whether to marry or whether to part on a compatibility score. Couples who score low often do well for years, and pairs who score high sometimes separate for reasons that have nothing to do with it. What the tradition reads is the grain of two energies meeting, not the character of a person or the care they put in. Keep it as a reference and let time spent together settle the judgement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do both people need to know their birth hour?
No. For whoever does not know it, the hour pillar is dropped and the score comes from the remaining pillars. Knowing the hour simply makes the reading finer.
Does a low score mean we are a bad match?
No. The score only puts into numbers how the two charts interlock, and it does not decide anything about the relationship. Read the lower items as the places to be careful with each other.
Can I use this for someone other than a partner?
Yes. Saju compatibility looks at how two people's energies meet, so it reads just as well for a business partner, a family member or a manager. The social compatibility section in particular suits those relationships.
What if only one of us knows the birth hour?
Enter the hour for the one who knows it and mark the other as unknown. The person without an hour is calculated from three pillars, and everything that uses the day stem, day branch and animal sign still appears.
If the two of you were born in different places, is the time corrected separately?
Yes — the true-solar-time correction is set per person, so you can pick a different city for each of you, or turn it on for only one of you. The correction touches only that person’s hour and day pillars, so the other chart is untouched. If someone said they do not know their birth time, no correction is applied to them.
Why do you ask for gender?
It sets the direction each person’s luck pillars run in. The compatibility score and everything shown on this page, though, do not depend on it — swap the two genders and you get the same result.
What if the two people use different calendars?
Set each person separately. One can be solar and the other lunar; each is converted before their chart is built, leap months included. Because this reading leans on the day pillar, choosing the wrong calendar swaps that pillar outright and the score moves a long way with it.
