Why the major arcana specifically
Of the seventy-eight cards in a tarot deck, fifty-six are the minor arcana, which deal with the scenes of everyday life. The remaining twenty-two, the major arcana, deal with the large joints of a life: being born, growing, coming apart and building again. That is why only the majors are used where a single card must stand for a lifetime. What is wanted is not advice for a day but the theme a person handles over a long stretch.

The twenty-two major arcana form a single story in order. Card zero, the Fool, sets out knowing nothing, receives tools from the Magician, learns about choosing from the Lovers, comes apart at the Tower, and closes the circle at twenty-one, the World. Looking at where your own card sits along that journey brings the grain out far more clearly than reading the card on its own, because the neighbours on either side say something about where you are headed.
There is more than one way to reduce
The method for reducing a birth date to a single card differs from book to book. Some reduce month, day and year separately and then add; some add every digit at once; and the rule for what to do when the total passes twenty-two varies as well. So a card you saw in another book or on another site may differ from the one here. Neither is wrong, only a different arithmetic, and checking which method is in use saves confusion.

It does not suit deciding what to do today. If you want advice that changes daily, the card of the day is the right place. A birth card earns its keep when you come back to it every few years.
