Five-Element Face Reading
Sort your face shape into the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) to read your innate temperament and flow.
Five-Element Face reading (五行形) is a traditional physiognomy that sorts your face shape into the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) to read your innate temperament. Pick your face shape to explore your personality, love, work, and health tendencies. Reading a face through the Five Elements continues from physiognomic manuals such as the Maui Sangbeop, which likened the grain of bone and flesh to the elements. It gathers the shape of the whole face into a single energy rather than weighing feature by feature. Its level of view is therefore different from a catalogue that reads forehead, eyes and nose separately. Most real faces mix two or three of the shapes, so simply choose the closest one.
How it works
A long, slender face reads as wood, an inverted triangle as fire, a round and generous face as earth, a square jaw as metal, and a full, rounded face as water. Take the one closest to your own.
What you'll get
You see the impression your elemental face gives and the temperament behind it, the texture of love and work, health tendencies assigned to that element, and this year's flow. Each of the five elements spends differently, so the grain for money splits by face shape as well.
This is not the same as the elements in Saju
Because the word is the same, the two are easy to confuse, but coming out as a wood face here does not mean your chart is heavy in wood. The elements in Saju are counted from the eight characters of the moment of birth, while this reading likens the shape of the whole face to one of five forces. The materials being read are entirely different, so it is normal for the two results to disagree. If anything, the face is the impression you present and the chart is what you were born with, so a mismatch between them is where something worth reading appears.
The shape of the bone and the depth of the flesh
The old manuals separated bone structure from flesh when reading a face. The five elemental forms point mainly at the bone structure. So when weight rises or falls, the impression changes while the form itself usually stays put. Rather than switching to the earth or water form because you have filled out and look rounder, take the outline drawn by your cheekbones and jaw as the thing to judge by.
How to pick your own form
A straight-on photograph is more accurate than a mirror, because in front of a mirror people tuck in the chin and compose the face without noticing. Looking at the photograph, push the fringe back to see the width of the forehead, then check whether the jawline is angular or round and whether the face runs long or wide. Those three settle it in most cases. A relaxed expression shows the outline better than a smiling one.
The health associations are not a diagnosis
Linking wood to the liver, fire to the heart, earth to the stomach, metal to the lungs and water to the kidneys is a classification traditional medicine has long used, not the result of any test. A metal-form face cannot mean weak lungs. Take it as a hint about where you tend to tire, and if something is genuinely wrong, see a doctor rather than this reading. A form is a shape, and a shape has never diagnosed anything.
Do not choose people by the shape of a face
Five forms is a very coarse sorting of facial outlines, so countless people fall into any one of them. That many cannot possibly share a temperament. In an interview or an introduction, please refrain from calling this reading to mind while looking at someone else. Keeping it to gauging how your own impression reads to others is about right, since that is the one face you can actually do something about.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am not sure which face shape I have.
Each option carries a hint about the shape. If it is borderline, look in a mirror and pick the impression closest to yours.
Does it judge from a photo?
No. Nothing is uploaded or stored; the reading comes only from the shape you choose yourself.
My face seems to mix two shapes.
A pure single type is rare. Choose the closest one, then read the description of your second-closest as well — the overlap is often where you recognize yourself.
How does this differ from the physiognomy catalogue?
The catalogue works through seven features one at a time: forehead, brows, eyes, nose, mouth and ears. This page divides the outline of the whole face into five elemental shapes, so the two fit together well.
